I, Carizz Cruzem, would like to file harassment charges against my co-worker, Mathi Alagan.

To have a firm basis on my accusations, let me first define harassment in legal terms in the office setting. Harassment is any visual, physical or verbal conduct toward another that interferes with working environment and job duties.

In the past, Mathi had been emailing me. He basically wrote that he liked me. At least that was what I understood from his unintelligible correspondence. After several of his failed attempts to get me to respond to him, I got finally fed up and told to his face to never email me again.

Since his first email, I’ve been genuinely annoyed by his mere presence. Hence, I only talk to him when and only when it is necessary. But to my distress, I must deal with him everyday since my unit’s USB port is not working and his workstation has the sole scanner in our department. I put up with it because I don’t really have any choice.

He had some argument with Mustafa and Zubair so he requested to only check PO’s from Jean and me. Fasi granted his request. I was ok with that setting at first. But eventually, I asked Mustafa and Zubair if it was possible for us three to check each other’s PO’s. They agreed.

You might be thinking that I am making a big deal out of nothing. But I’d like you to understand that I’m going out of my way to have as little as possible interaction with Mathi. I don’t want him to have the slightest provocation that I am in any way encouraging his intentions towards me.

Yesterday, Monday, 6 September 2010, at about 10 in the morning, I went to the pantry near the elevator to eat a bar of chocolate for energy boost as I was having an episode of nausea. Mathi was there. I was about to sit on the only chair when he began to pull the chair to himself. Since I was only eating a bar of chocolate, I let him have the chair. He sat. I ate in silence while standing as far as possible from him, which was like only an arm’s length judging by the pantry’s cramped space. I munched at the chocolate in three bites and drank water. When I was done, he offered his food to me. I shook my head. As much as possible, I don’t want to waste my voice on him. He tried to grab me and I jumped back just in time. But his hand brushed against my waist and my blood started to boil.

I told him in a firm but quiet voice, “Never touch me again, ever.” With that, I started for the door but he rolled the chair he was sitting on, effectively blocking my way out.

“Please get out of my way,” I asked politely. He sat still while his arms were stretched out and began mumbling something garbled. I can never understand whatever this guy is saying.

“If you don’t start moving, I would have to punch you,” I said. He didn’t budge. Out of his incoherent ramblings, I made out “What do you think?” while his hand is balled into a fist. I was becoming impatient. I had a lot of work to do and this imbecile had the gall to actually block my way.

“Mathi, I won’t repeat myself again, get out of my way.” He continued his moronic babble and still glued himself in front of the door. By this time, I could feel toxic fumes coming out of my nostrils and fire ready to come out of my mouth

So I asked him, “Would you like me to call someone?” He was rattled a bit and I felt some hesitation. I stared on the wall phone. And then finally, he moved just enough for a mice to pass. I rolled my eyes. He moved farther and I sprinted out of the pantry. I was oozing with fury to say the least.

Mathi wasn’t the first and only guy who attempted to correspond with me through emails. A couple of guys from this company tried emailing me as well. I don’t have any problem with that because I can just ignore the messages. But touching me physically, that is a whole different issue. It goes beyond my tolerance level.

Is my complaint too much? Perhaps. But I am doing this out of kindness. The next time he touches me, he must make sure that he is not near the stairs, or he will have to have his whole body in cast. If he attempts to touch me again, he must make sure that there is no pen around me because his eye will inadvertently become a penholder. If he tries to touch me again, he must make sure that it is not in the pantry once more because he will bathe in boiling water from the huge thermos.

This kind of behavior has no first offense. It is an offense period and must stop now. I do not want to wait for something more serious to happen before I bring this to your attention.

I cannot trust myself to take this matter into my own hands. Hence, I am soliciting your kindness to look into this at the earliest and take suitable action.
