Since the earliest civilization; arts, culture and traditions have defined the uniqueness of a country. At present, many countries are struggling to keep their own identity. Technology, in terms of computers, has been one of the benchmarks that measure the world’s constant development. However, though much help to the economy; it encourages emulation of a “better” art, culture and tradition. Keeping one’s own ideology, heritage and pride will strengthen and maintain the arts, culture and traditions of a country, which is developing steadily.

Ideology is the way one thinks. It comprises principles and the way one reacts or responds to changes. Latter generations tend to be forgetful and be more flexible while former generations feel nostalgic for the past. Ideology is also the very thing that inspires Cambodia’s elders to instill to their young all that they could remember regarding her arts, cultures and traditions.

Heritage, like languages and historical places, is what ancestors pass on to younger generations. This should have much sentimental value; thus it is hard to forget. However, those dreaded civil war years have almost eradicated Cambodia’s identity. Since such is the case, Cambodia has to be all the more challenged to retrieve back that which has been lost because arts, culture and traditions are parts of what – and who – her people are.

Pride has an implication that one is satisfied with oneself making borrowing or absorbing other countries’ identities impossible. One must believe that one’s unique identity is worth keeping because that’s what makes one an individual, a nation – one that is governed by its own people. Now, more than ever, Cambodia’s arts, culture and traditions need to be revived if she is to develop without having that guilt of imitating other countries’ identity.

In conclusion, treasuring one’s ideology, heritage and pride will not only boost a country’s arts, culture and traditions but also serve as the catalyst that enhances further developments. Cambodia’s arts culture and traditions are precariously hanging-on to their existence. What are you going to do?
